Caring for White and Coloured Cotton Separately

A practical guide to sorting, stain treatment, drying and storage choices for white and coloured everyday cotton.

Sorting is a useful first step Read each sewn-in label before washing. Separate whites from strong or unstable colours, and group garments by compatible temperature, cycle and soil level. A white cotton vest and a coloured printed garment may both contain cotton but still need different treatment. Treat marks without guesswork Act promptly, blot rather than spread a spill, and choose a treatment suited to the garment’s colour and finish. Test unfamiliar products discreetly. Chlorine bleach is not an automatic answer for every white garment because trims, elastics, prints and finishes may respond differently. Wash, dry and store thoughtfully Use measured detergent and avoid overloading. Reshape garments after washing and follow labelled drying guidance; unnecessary high heat may affect fit or appearance. Store items only when fully dry, and mend small openings before regular movement makes them larger. Care cannot prevent all ageing. It can, however, reduce avoidable stress and help a useful garment remain in rotation for longer.
